THE STORY OF THE SONG
The opening track on the album is pure apocalyptic chaos to me. In its original form it was pure punk rock but I decided I really wanted to get some darkness into the song as “Crash City” is not a pretty place to be. The clean guitars in the opening of the song were completely inspired by The Cure (I’m sure that is pretty obvious as no one really sets the mood like they can). I know Gothic Punk certainly isn’t anything new to the music world but I definitely wanted something in that vein to open the record with. I wanted the listener to know this journey we’re about to embark on is no bed of roses. This song is purely about Los Angeles and the people you meet along the way. I spent the beginnings of my life on the east coast spending many nights in New York down on St. Marks in the village and many early mornings stumbling out of establishments in Alphabet City. The biggest difference to me about the two places is people from New York will look you straight in the eye and tear you to pieces in a matter of weeks. People from Los Angeles slowly try to destroy you over a long period of time and do most of their damage behind your back. I’ve always told people that wanted to move here, “the weather is nice but it’s nothing like the movies or what you see on television”. I’ve seen a lot here in LA (successes, failures, suicides, alcohol, drugs, addiction, love, death and people generally doing horrible things to one another) I would suggest you dig into the lyrics and listen to Melody Black tell the tale…I can guarantee you one thing, this ain’t no story about Disneyland.
