THE STORY OF THE SONG
Now this song in my opinion has a strange story attached to it. In trying to form my first real band, I stumbled across a group of people that had the same musical tastes as I did and we started rehearsing some songs in a crappy beat down studio right of Santa Monica Blvd. Our singer at the time was married to an old school punk rocker (whom I thought was a cool guy) and they lived in a guest house up in the canyon. As I got to know the couple over time I realized her husband was doing heroin. I had never and still have never gone near the stuff and was quite surprised how passé it was to be going on in their home. My singer seemed to be a little fed up with the relationship and was searching for a way out. I inquired about the heroin use and she literally said “I hope it kills him and then I can be done with the marriage”. I was quite shocked by these remarks and immediately started writing “Needle Damage”. It was sad and obvious to me that she didn’t care at all about her own husband or anything he did. She would do just about anything not to go home or be around him. Unfortunately this story does not have a happy ending as she finally did leave him and he wound up taking his own life. It is a tragic story and I think I took his passing harder than she did. The song perfectly reflects the inner workings of her mind in regards to her husband, his drug use and his death; nothing seemed to bother her at all. It was a shocking thing to watch to say the least. This true story has nothing to do with current singer Baby Strange, she did a great job in my opinion of bringing the angst to the microphone and capturing that moment in time!
