THE STORY OF THE SONG
“Self Destruction” didn’t take me long to write. Some say the streets of Hollywood are paved with gold (I would strongly disagree) others think it’s a nightmare and on this day for me the streets were covered with the pieces of my broken heart. When you see something that breaks you in two sometimes the best thing to do is try to get it into song form as soon as possible. I had just found my ex girlfriend with her new boyfriend on the streets of Los Angeles. My heart broke and my mind ached. The questions were endless. She moved on already? What is happening? The only way I knew how to cope at the time was to hit the bottle and hit it hard. I started thinking “This stuff has really got me by the balls and it’s starting to take everything”. Waves of Social Distortion’s “I Was Wrong” came over me and my inspiration was set. I raced over to this lock out studio I was renting in North Hollywood which had no air conditioning and inside temperatures reached triple digits on a daily basis (it was literally like trying to write a song in a sauna). I started carving out the verses. I was so angry and broken! Who was this new guy she was with? Why should I worry, she’ll take him down just like she did me. (I think she married him, so it shows how much I know) but I was literally self destructing – the love, the agony, the drinking, the anger. She was dead to me, there was no going back. She had moved on and I was stuck inside my emotions with nowhere to go. Needless to say it was a tough day. The lessons we need to learn sometimes are difficult but I think I finally got the message I was fired! If another guy wasn’t proof enough for me, what would be?
